This is different. But it’s got ninja chickens, a cynical penguin, and lots of cheese, so what’s not to like?

A Cheese Related Mishap is a kid-friendly graphic novella that doesn’t rely on cartoon tie-ins. The humor is sophomoric, but there are still a couple of good chuckles, even for adults. The art is simple but not unskilled. Parts are radically clever. Protagonist Raymond Q. Wonderful is eclipsed by Mellville the penguin. Mellville is self-centered and apathetic, but he doesn’t come across as callous or mean-spirited like Dogbert, or even Garfield, even when displaying a general disregard for human life.

The “Other Stories” in this collection include Captain Cautious, an uptight super-hero who works for a millionaire sheep, and Western birds who form a vaudeville act. Say what you like about creator Friesen; he has original ideas. He’s also 17. Aside from the clever ideas and artistic talent, you have to give him props for creating something so friendly and approachable when many of his peers would be crafting comics featuring large-breasted, gun-toting bimbos.
