Although the cover tries hard to persuade you otherwise, you haven’t accidentally picked up a copy of Maxim by mistake (not that there’s much difference between Marvel and Maxim these days).

Instead, it’s a not altogether bad Marvel comic which tries to reveal the origins of Emma Frost. Up until she now she’s had several, mutually contradictory back stories. (Even before Grant Morrison started writing her that way, wasn’t she supposed to be British for a while there?).

Now we learn about the woman who would intentionally turn herself into a shallow stereotype like The White Queen. The answer being, the shy mouse of a daughter to a lovely, fabulously wealthy Patrician New England family where being the best simply isn’t good enough. And while young Emma has it rough, getting her pre-mutant headaches and having to have her make-up for the big dance applied by her older brother Christian (hey, just for a change, could Christian not be gay?), it really isn’t very effecting or engaging. Maybe next issue.
