The Biologic Show

Fantagraphics has a long-standing position as a publisher of esoteric and bizarre work. The Biologic Show does nothing to alter that reputation. The symbolic, expressionistic offerings, (one cannot really call them stories), are heavily slanted toward sexual, oral and cerebral mutilation.

For example in the title piece, Mr. Lucy is persuaded by a police detective to commit suicide in order to follow his dead fiancée to heaven. After he does, he is robbed, blinded, crippled, castrated and abandoned on the street. When his fiancée happens by, she tells him she is happier than she’s ever been and to stay away from her. Apparently, the writer has some unresolved relationship issues.

Even if the reader has no trouble identifying with the characters and situations or expresses no confusion about the intent or theme, there is still the matter of the grotesque artwork and jagged lettering to contend with.

Some of these visions by artist/writer Al Columbia were first published in Deadline UK.
