Gyo
(Viz, 2003)
™ and © Viz Communications, Inc.
The creator of Uzumaki, Junji Ito has made a name for himself for being one sick puppy. With a penchant for making animals the harbingers of doom, he returns to show how the ocean can have its revenge on a reckless humanity.
On the island of Okinawa, Tadashi and Kaori find splitting up hard to do—especially when an awful stench stops her in her tracks and she is chased by a zombie fish with spiderlike legs. How did this thing evolve? Seeking to help, Dr. Koyanagi realizes that this may be just the beginning of a never-ending nightmare and the twisted result of vindictive human ingenuity.
The odor foreshadows something far worse, since now legions of creatures, from sharks to squid, arise from the sea and overwhelm the civilian population. With a detailed eye for strange transformations, Gyo makes the impossible plausible. Though some scenes make little sense, fans of freaky fantasy will want to know what happens next to the poor teen Tadashi.
