Airshell
(Americanime, 2005-2006)
™ and © Americanime Corporation
Years ago, with Earth on the brink of collapse, a fragile balance was achieved through careful ecological planning. Airplanes no longer travel the skies and spaceships have been grounded as even the slightest disruption of the atmosphere could bring about the end of the world. Rene’ observes this sheltered Earth and sees oddities that others seemingly ignore. The weather follows set patterns. Train tracks between local cities form a hexagon instead of the straight line everyone claims. Perhaps most importantly, he doesn’t believe that airplanes stopped flying to save the environment, but because the sky became too small. Are these signs of a troubled young mind, or clues to a larger conspiracy?
— Lorie Witkop
Writer and artist Lia Fiengo (Cold Dream) has constructed her own genre “sci-fi-or-something-like-that.” Personally inspired by the work of Tsutomu Nihei, she wanted to create and a draw a story “placed between dream and reality.” Airshell creates a fissure into the comic sublime as she weaves contrasts between dreams, nightmares and reality together. In the distant future, the precise date of which is unclear but still compelling, Rene is trying to uncover a secret. Rene’s perception of reality is different from most. But maybe his insights can help him unearth the mystery of his dreams.
