New Excalibur

The post-House of M Marvel Universe is a brave new world for its mutant population, not to mention a scary one. With 80 percent or more of the world’s mutants stripped of their powers, those still empowered individuals find their responsibility even greater—and their struggle even more difficult. Captain Britain finds circumstance and opportunity right to form a brand new super-hero team from the ashes of the former Excalibur… and with a lot of familiar faces. New team members include Talia Wagner (Nightcrawler’s daughter from an alternate dimension), secret service agent Pete Wisdom, and even a very old friend: Dazzler.

Fresh and entertaining, this book promises to be different from X-Men spin-off books, if for no other reason than its unique and underutilized cast. The mutant team is written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Michael Ryan.

From the Comics Buyer’s Guide:

This should probably be called The “New” Excalibur. Although X-Men master Chris Claremont writes believable dialogue and action sequences, the story creaks with X–Men history. Dazzler shows up and, although clearly a throwback to the ’70s, doesn’t look much older than the rest of the team. The new team features Nocturne, Nightcrawler’s daughter from an alternate history. Additionally, the original line–up of the team must be explained, and, oh, yeah, they’ll be fighting an evil version of the original X–Men. Confused yet?

Claremont does hint at one tantalizing possible use of mutant powers: medical treatments. At one point, the group uses their mutant abilities to save Dazzler from a heart attack. Imagine a team of X–men that worked at a hospital saving lives. It would sort of be ER meets, well, The X–Men.

Also, can we finally jettison The Juggernaut? Didn’t this guy used to kill people? Marvel has ruined too many villains with this ploy. Magneto, Venom, and Juggernaut should form The Society for Sometimes Evil Villains. They could sit around with The Punisher and debate who is good and who is evil.
