All-Star Superman

    (DC, 2006–2011)

In this issue, Superman’s origin is retold (an “S” is added to a word that forever changes how you’ll look at a character); he travels to the sun to save an exploratory team; then receives unhappy news, while Luthor achieves his heart’s desire and Los Lane gets the surprise of her life.

Those are only the bullet points; as usual with anything written by Grant Morrison, there’s never less than a flurry of outré ideas, but clearly he and Frank Quitely understand that Superman is the main attraction. And they’ve produced one who is worthy of the name.

Quitely’s art isn’t just as good as always; he seems to have taken one of those quantum leaps truly fine artists periodically make. If he had a weak spot before, it was his overly chiseled, heavily lined faces, especially female ones. (Even those who were supposed to be sex bombs sometimes looked more like weathered desert rats.) But here he’s given readers both a remarkably evocative and authentic version of Superman and a Lois who’s worthy of his attention.
