Cedric the Dragon Slayer: The Hunters
(Outcast, 2005)
™ and © 2005 Eric Goff
This preview provides a glimpse into the fantasy world of Cedric. A tribe of werewolves are being hunted by local villagers. Cedric meets them and is outraged at the villagers’ callousness. Taking up the tribe’s cause, Cedric interferes, but his actions may cause more harm than good. McCay weaves a tale with moral ambiguity. Not everything in Cedric’s world is black and white (so to speak). This gives Cedric’s world more depth than the average D&D-campaign-turned-into-a-fantasy-comic comic book.
Erik Evensen’s art is good but could use more backgrounds in a few of the panels. For a guy who’s traveling in a medieval world, Cedric travels light: no backpack or provisions, just a couple of weapons and some clothes. It might’ve been nice to see a dragon in a dragon-slayer comic book, but it remains a solid comic book. Outcast is also affiliated with IMPH and Johnny Raygun.
The $2 cover price for this that the creators charged at a show seemed steep for a preview, but the full issue should be worth checking out.
