Optimism of Youth
(Kitchen Sink, 1991)
™ and ©1970-1973, 1991 Jack Jackson
Jack Jackson (also known as “Jaxon”) is given credit for the creation of the first underground comic book—the satirical God Nose—in 1964. Like many of the underground creators of the 1960s and 1970s, Jackson drew a great deal of inspiration from the EC Comics of the 1950s; and his work reflects the influence of Mad and the [Al] Feldstein horror and science fiction titles—as well as [Harvey] Kurtzman’s war titles. The emphasis here is on satire, sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll, as the stories precede Jackson’s revisionist histories Comanche Moon and Los Tejanos.
