Captain Universe is the umbrella name used by a variety of characters who become imbued with the mysterious Uni-Power which grants its hosts cosmic power during times of crisis. Created by Bill Mantlo, the concept first appeared in The Micronauts then was given a try-out in three issues of Marvel Spotlight in 1980 with art by Steve Ditko.   After years of dormancy, Captain Universe was resurrected in two issues of Amazing Fantasy in preparation for the 5-week Captain Universe event month which is meant to whet the appetite for a new Captain Universe title. The premise is that the Uni-Power is somehow malfunctioning and must bond with several Marvel heroes, copy their powers, and attempt to confront the entity that is threatening it.   While journeying to the Shi’ar Empire, the Uni-Power and the Gladiator are captured by Krosakis, a lizard-like tyrant who commands the crew of his ship through threats and intimidation. Krosakis feeds on energy so the Uni-Power is the mother lode to him. Fortunately the Silver Surfer, doing his best Obi Wan Kenobi impression, “feels a disturbance in power cosmic,” and intervenes.   This title the final chapter of the Captain Universe event, yet it, as all the rest, are numbered one since the book also carries the companion hero’s logo.
