Now, this is what it’s all about! Astro Boy, a character as iconic in Japan as Superman and Mickey Mouse in the United States, hosts a series of educational biographies, starting here with Helen Keller.

The story is inspiring on many levels. First, there’s Helen herself. Blind and deaf from infancy, she learned to communicate, attended Radcliffe, and became an accomplished author and lecturer. Then, there’s Anne Sullivan, the acclaimed “miracle worker” who broke Helen’s barriers. These stories stand on their own.

After each chapter, Astro and Dr. Elefun discuss the salient points and make them more relevant to readers’ lives. This is the way to make learning fun: provide gripping tales told in an easily digested format. The addition of popular characters certainly doesn’t hurt any! The volume advertises additional entries in the series, including Einstein, Beethoven, Anne Frank, and Mother Theresa. These should not only be devoured by comics fans, they should be given to kids with all haste. With any luck, the volumes should find their way into classrooms and school libraries.
