Generation M
(Marvel, 2006)
™ and © 2006 Marvel Characters, Inc.
The House of M was Marvel’s big event in 2005. Thematically similar to DC’s original Crisis on Infinite Earths, House of M sought to simplify the universe and reduce the burgeoning mutant population that had become an unwieldy storytelling quagmire. Generation M picks up immediately after House of M and centers on Sally Floyd, a down-and-out investigative reporter with a drinking problem and a recent tragedy in her personal life. Several years ago, she wrote a series of columns called “The Mutant Diaries” for which she interviewed some of the little known mutants who were not affiliated with high profile organizations. Her articles revealed a humanity that their mutations had denied them. Now these former mutants, (at least the ones who survived the Decimation), are struggling to make new lives. Floyd resurrects her concept, calling it “The Ex-Mutant Diaries” and suddenly she’s newsworthy again. So much, in fact, that someone is sending her pictures of ex-mutants that have been murdered, with only the words: “Not enough died.”
— George Haberberger
