Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden
(Tokyopop, 2004-2006)
™ and ©2000 Bunjuro Nakayama/Bow Ditama
Reads right to left; b&w
Like Love Hina and Oh My Goddess!, the premise of Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden is a male adolescent fantasy. A lonely teen, Suguru Misato, acquires a maid, one who is irresistibly cute, loving, and hard-working. In fact, everybody seems to be jealous of her—his lusty classmates, his horny teacher, and his insecure female acquaintances. Unbeknownst to them, she isn’t even human; she’s actually an android, a veteran who protects the Earth against extraterrestrials. Writer Bunjuro Nakayama effortlessly balances raunchy wit and human warmth in this combination of romantic comedy and science fiction adventure. Although the material is derivative of other Japanese comics, the lovable characters made the series a cult favorite in the U.S.
