When Realities Collide

Rick Lundeen, creator of So You Want to Be a Super-Villain?, is back with his send-up of the science-fiction genre.

Commander Gok of the Klungov Empire attends an interplanetary convention. Expecting to room with the rugged Earthman Buck Gordon, he finds himself, instead, with the lithe and prancing Japanese hero Space Prince. To say that Gok encounters culture shock would be putting it mildly.

There are a number of witty observations, such as the “universally convenient translator” and the myriad races that are perfectly human aside from various small bumps on their foreheads. The humor is more in the delivery than in the observations themselves, since these comments on the genre are hardly innovative.

Lundeen’s art suits the tongue-in-cheek nature of the comic book, depicting the dry Gok and the effervescent Space Prince in appropriately conflicting styles. The art is frequently dark and tends to get murky. Lundeen might want to try a whiter paper or else lay off the many shades of gray.
