What If: Captain America
(Marvel, 2006)
™ and ©2006 Marvel Characters, Inc.
In 2004 Marvel resurrected the What If…? concept, making it a series of one-shot specials. In 2005, it became the December event featuring six one-shots that introduced a new “watcher.” Hector Espejo is the world’s greatest hacker, known to the online community as The Watcher. He is called this because he has hacked into the internet of another dimension. The alternate histories he sees there are drastically different than the kind of “familiar-yet-different” spin that have comprised “What if...?” stories. In the Captain America What If…? title Stephen Rogers is a corporal in the Civil War and is newly assigned to regiment commanded by Colonel Buck Barnes. Barnes is a corrupt, sadistic officer who soon becomes provoked by Rogers’ compassion and sense of justice. After a violent altercation with Barnes, Rogers is left near death but revived and reinvigorated by a shaman who sees him as the fulfillment of an Indian legend. Rogers’ undergoes a mystical joining with an eagle totem and is reborn as a living symbol of equality and justice.
