The android girl Alita finds love amidst the desolation of the Scrapyard. She meets Hugo, a boy whose goal is to fulfill his late brother’s wish of traveling to the floating city Tiphares in a giant balloon. In one issue, as the rain pounds the Scrapyard, Hugo explains to Alita what happened to his older sibling. His brother’s wife revealed to the hunter-warriors his plans of escape; consequently, he was dismembered. Violence is often graphic and disturbing, aptly portraying the Scrapyard’s wasteland of broken dreams.
