Daughters of the Dragon: Deadly Hands Special

Before setting the high water mark for dynamic female leads in comics with Phoenix and Storm in X-Men (1st Series), Chris Claremont honed his skill with female characters on a variety of second- and third-tier books, including these three all but forgotten black and white back-up stories from 1977 collected and reprinted in this 76 page one-shot in 2005.

So-called Daughters of the Dragon, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing were key supporting characters in various Power Man and Iron Fist books and occasionally turned up in X-Men as well. Knight, a former policewoman with a bionic arm courtesy of Stark Industries, and Wing, an expert in martial arts who fights with a katana, are best friends and private investigators who fight crime together.

Daughters of the Dragon harkens back to a more innocent time for comics and represent one of Marvel’s many stabs at the exploitation film genre popular in 1970s. Knight and Wing take on yakuza, crime lords and vampires.

Also included is a long interview with illustrator Marshall Rogers who went on to success at DC working on a variety of Batman titles. Rogers discusses the artist’s role as a story-crafter in the 1970s-era Marvel bullpen.
