Matt Williams could have stayed in his hometown, played football, and lived the All-American Dream. Instead, he left Earth to become a soldier for an alien race known as The Acacians. At the time, the Acacians were experimenting with a super-soldier program, and Matt was one of their subjects. In time he would become their greatest soldier. Known then as the Griffin, he fought for the Acacians for nearly twenty years.

Then, he deserted.

To put it mildly, the Acacians were not amused. They sent a space fleet to recapture their greatest achievement, threatening to destroy Earth unless he surrendered. Meanwhile, a variety of political intrigues, both on Earth and on Acacia, might wind up destroying Earth no matter what Williams decides.
