A disclaimer: I met writer Neil Kleid at a social function about 10 years ago. Both being comics fans, we got to talking. And, as most comics fans secretly (or not so secretly) long to be pros, I took his aspirations to break into the business with cautious optimism. Since then, I have enjoyed finding his contributions sandwiched between those of “the big boys” in a number of anthologies. And now here he is, writing a series for Image.

Kleid is one heck of a writer. I’ve particularly enjoyed some of his prose. This tale, the story of “heroes” normally kept under wraps by the government, has some good bits, but the canvas isn’t large enough for Kleid to really cut loose. The art is a little rough in places, but it’s generally fun and it superbly fits the tone of the work. Special props to colorist Angel Marin for the bang-up job. The difference between the here and now, a 1960s flashback, and newspaper photos is skillfully rendered.
