Science-fiction author Lucius Shepard weaves the story of Vermillion, a city so large it spans light-years.

Jonathan Cave has sought out a wasted curiosity named Fry to whom he recounts the story of his pledge to his dying father. Cave’s estranged brother, Daniel, was a member of the Order, a fanatical religious sect that communes with artificial intelligence. They had never been close to each other, and their reunion in orbit above the planet that the Order inhabited was vindictive and accusatory, much like their childhood. The scene ended with shouted insults that foreshadowed the attempted murder of Jonathan. A monk of the Order interceded and Jonathan Cave found himself an unwilling companion to his savior…Brother Fry.

A six-issue series, Shepard used the infinite settings that a city as vast as Vermillion presented to tell a myriad of metaphorical parables.
