The Trap-Door Maker: A Prequel to the Phantom of the Opera

This prelude to Gaston Leroux’s novel from the 19th century imagines the title character’s itinerant youth before his infamous downward spiral at the Paris Opera House. Writer/illustrator Pete Bregman weaves together the meager story threads about Erik’s pre-Phantom years found in Leroux’s original novel and fleshes out a compelling back story in this multi-volume series featuring sultans, eunuchs, spies, and assassins.

The hideously deformed Erik arrives in Persia working as a masked carnival magician and sideshow freak. Erik soon comes to the attention of the sultan who hires Erik to engineer secret passages in the sultan’s castle. Erik’s talents in other areas enable his rise to a position of power that eventually threatens the sultan himself.
