What If: Submariner

In 2004 Marvel resurrected the What If…? concept making it a series of one-shot specials. In 2005 it became the December event featuring six one-shots that introduced a new “watcher.”   Hector Espejo is the world’s greatest hacker, known to the online community as The Watcher. He is called this because he has hacked into the internet of another dimension. The alternate histories he sees there are drastically different than the kind of “familiar-yet-different” spin that have comprised “What if...?” stories.

But in this What If? one-shot Hector barely appears, so if this were the only title in this series than the reader he might be a bit lost. Questions arise about what Hector is viewing in all of these stories. Are they videos of events from decades ago when no one would have been present to record them? But don’t think about it too much.   The primary deviation in the Sub-Mariner’s life in this universe is that he was raised as an American by his father. Partnering with the Human Torch in World War II, he helped defeat the Nazis and then became an undercover operative for the United States government, turning his back on his Atlantean heritage. But when he discovers that second-generation Nazis have conquered Atlantis, his loyalties are soon tested.
