Idiotz
(Tokyopop, 2006)
™ and © 2006 Gary Greenfield and Tokyopop, Inc.
From the Publisher:
Harold Melman wanted nothing more than to successfully serve his country in the armed forces. Unfortunately, his clumsiness and lack of wit have prevented any branch of the armed services from taking him. So what’s a wannabe hero to do? Gather a mismatched band of fighting fools, of course! Now leading an outrageous army, Melman goes forth as Capt. Pinhead to battle a yard full of gophers… that turn out to be giant mole monsters intent on invading the surface world and overthrowing our species!
From the Comics Buyer’s Guide:
The appeal in this volume is elusive. The humor is far too heavy–handed to be funny.
Let’s start with the name. If “Idiotz” were an anagram for, say, “International Department of Intrigue Operations and Terrorist-Zapping,” then the title would be a happy coincidence. Since it is just a random assortment of letters, the characters’ willingness to adopt it as their team’s name makes them too stupid for readers to accept.
Then, there are the characters. The star is Captain Pinhead (not his given name, but a moniker he willingly accepts). Then there’s Nitwit (not his real name, but a nickname to which he has no objection). It defies the willing suspension of disbelief that there are so many people this stupid running around, let alone that they could find each other.
Figuring I might be too old to appreciate it, I gave Idiotz to a young reader of Archie comics and manga. It was soon returned with a polite, “No, thanks.” The real potential audience might be precluded by the 10+ age label.
Nice art, though.
