Revolution on the Planet of the Apes

Revolution on the Planet of the Apes is the answer to a decades-old wish—a way to see the action and events that unfolded between the fourth and fifth movies of the Planet of the Apes series. Revolution takes place during the 10 years between Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) and picks up the day after the events in Conquest. San Diego is still in chaos, and the ape revolution is spreading, while the president and his team react to events while trying to control information and keep the highly propagandized masses from realizing trouble is brewing. At the same time, Caesar is trying to figure out where to go from here, knowing that he must build an ape civilization out of the ashes of the human civilization that is destined to fall. Meanwhile, another talking ape has arisen: Aldo, at the Hasslein Air Force Base at Groom Lake.

And that’s just the first of three stories in this issue. The first follow-up is “Caesar’s Journal,” in which readers peruse pages from events as they unfold and are foretold by the leader of the ape revolution — a neat touch, showing that Caesar has a creative side worthy of a comic-book artist. The second follow-up is a bit of background on the current president of the United States, showing in part how he rose to power on a platform of human power and ape hatred. All the stories are well-written and –illustrated—and the main story’s art and dialogue are evocative of the films. When reading the words of Caesar, one almost “hears” them in Roddy McDowall’s voice. This is an excellent first offering, and, from previews on the website, the next issues will maintain its high quality.
