Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane

    (Marvel, 2006–2007)
™ and © Marvel Characters, Inc.

High-school student Mary Jane Watson knows something about bad relationships, having had them with Harry Osborn and Flash Thompson only recently. Maybe things will be different with Spider-Man, who’s not only saved her life more than once but seems to know who she is. Her friends tell her she’s crazy, but better to try than settle for the geeky teenager who’s been tutoring her—a nobody named Peter Parker.

This tender little romantic tale, set in a simpler—and many would say much better—time in the Marvel Universe, is written by Sean McKeever and drawn with a slight manga influence by Takeshi Miyazawa.

From the Comic Buyer’s Guide:

This comic is called Spider–Man Loves Mary Jane, but flip the names around to get a more accurate assessment of the first issue. It’s an ongoing series following Sean McKeever and Takeshi Miyazawa’s original Mary Jane mini-series and its sequel Mary Jane: Homecoming (the events of which are heavily referenced here), which exist in their own, nebulous continuity that’s one part Stan Lee—John Romita and one part WB drama. The plot here is charmingly simple, as Mary Jane insists that she is going to land a date with Spider–Man, only to be shot down by the super–hero, who is—oh, irony of ironies—secretly pining for her in his civilian identity.

The soap–operatic elements in early Spider–Man stories were always intriguing, and it’s refreshing to see them take the forefront. Given the all–ages nature of the series, McKeever can’t fully explore high school as they do in those aforementioned WB dramas, but he comes up with a smarter than average kids’ book that has enough substance and heart to be an appealing alternative to standard super-hero comics.
