What If: Thor

In 2004 Marvel resurrected the What If…? concept making it a series of one-shot specials. In 2005 it became the December event featuring six one-shots that introduced a new “watcher.”   Hector Espejo is the world’s greatest hacker, known to the online community as The Watcher. He is called this because he has hacked into the internet of another dimension. The alternate histories he sees there are drastically different than the kind of “familiar-yet-different” spin that have comprised “What if...?” stories.   This story featuring Thor finds Galactus intending to consume Asgard to slake his ever-present hunger. Thor leads the gods of Asgard in a bloody battle to defend their home and drive Galactus away, but many are killed in the futile effort. But then Galactus offers Thor an option not unlike the bargain made with Norrin Radd when Radd became the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s regular continuity. If Thor agrees to become his herald, Galactus will spare Asgard. Seeing no other recourse, Thor accepts and leads Galactus to uninhabited worlds or planets he deems worthy of destruction. Until one of his father’s messengers arrives and informs him that Odin is dead.
