Ares
(Marvel, 2006)
™ and © Marvel Characters, Inc.
After tackling Asgardians twice in The Mighty Thor and his own creator-owned book, Hammer of the Gods, Mike Oeming takes on the Greek pantheon with this series focusing on the god of war. Like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III, the title character seems incapable of pulling himself away from a life full of trouble. Often portrayed as a villainous character in other interpretations, such as DC’s Wonder Woman and the Xena television series, Oeming’s Ares makes a sympathetic protagonist even though the writer doesn’t shy away from the character’s inherently violent personality. It’s a surprisingly sober portrayal from a publisher that has often portrayed Hercules as a goofier variation of Thor.
