Daughters of the Dragon

Longtime Marvel super villain, The Rhino, and other sillier super villains such as the 8–Ball and Humbug are brought up to date in this semi–silly, semi–serious story starring Misty and Colleen, teenage valley–girl types who have no problems battling and defeating these costumed villains. They nonchalantly go through the motions while talking to each other on their cell phones—among other things—making for a most amusing take on the same old traditional super–hero storylines.

From the Comic Buyer’s Guide:

The writing team of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti have made a name for themselves on a number of DC projects in recent years and now they’re starting to pile up Marvel work, including this one featuring two mostly forgotten ’70s characters.

It’s not exactly 21 Down, a series that attracted readers and praise. The first issue has sharp art and is reasonably entertaining but suffers from a preponderance of clichés. It seems that, since these characters were stereotypical when they were introduced (sassy black woman, Asian lady with martial arts skills), the writers don’t want to stray far from the source. The motif of “loser super-villains teaming up and being characterized as average guys” has been done to death recently and isn’t compelling here. Poor Rhino has to be one of the most overused cannon-fodder villains in Marvel right now, probably second only to The Wrecking Crew. And it’s a bad sign when the shocking page 22 reveal comes and the reader just wonders whom they’re looking at, instead of, you know, being shocked.
