Robo-Hunter (Rebellion)
(Rebellion, 2004-2005)
™ and © Rebellion
Veteran Robo-Hunter Sam Slade (that’s S-L-A-Y-E-D to you; it’s his signature “joke,” so you’d better get used to it) who’s feeling his age agrees to go on a mission to the distant planet Verdus, where something has gone wrong. Thanks to a faster–than–light “mishap,” Slade is returned to his fighting trim, and his pilot, oh so coincidentally named Kidd, is reduced to a (talking) baby. Together, they try to survive on a world where deadly robots rule. Like a far better–known 2000 A.D. feature, Robo–Hunter’s action is leavened by dark humor and a lead who’s more a flimsy plot contrivance than an actual character and only half as interesting as his setting. In this case, meaning artist Ian Gibson’s wild and wide variety of robots that are as silly as they are homicidal. But, unlike Dredd, blasting things isn’t always the answer, and it’s fun watching Slade negotiate his way out of deadly situations. Unfortunately, the humor is frequently forced and the adventures quickly fall into slight variations on an iron cast formula.
