The Stereos: In the Garage

    (Brandon Hanvey, 2005)

Four kids from different sectors of the high school experience end up in detention and start a band. Naming themselves The Stereos (as in “types”) an introverted braniac, a romantic goth, an ineffable slacker, and a doglike punk create… well, we never get to hear the fusion of their efforts, but it sure must sound original. Brandon Harvey writes and draws this tale of friendship being stronger for all its unlikeliness. The art is minimalist, but in the consistent, devised way, not the “drawing comics is easy!” way. The dialogue’s a little stilted, but flows well if you insert your own contractions mentally. More importantly, the plot doesn’t just ride the rails, dodging clichés without growing complex.
