Widow (Avatar)
(Avatar, 1997)
™ and ©1997 Mike Wolfer
Emma, a beautiful, sexy woman (albeit at times with spider-like appendages extending from her back and even her face!) is the star of this title that follows the 1990s trend of tough-talking, unapologetic bad girls. The clean, crisp, black-and-white art is solid and pleasing which helps to compensate for the slang-laden dialogue that punctuates Emma’s outrageous tactics. For example, before a bloody battle to the death, she takes all of her clothes off so she won’t get them messy.
Meanwhile, her boyfriend, Drew Triggert, who also grows spider legs, is touring Hell with a reformed demon, a gun-toting FBI agent, and a severed, but nonetheless abusive, head, in an attempt to rescue Emma. The story is rather tongue-in-cheek and, maybe inadvertently, humorous, as the characters maintain a detached aloofness even under the most grotesque situations.
