The renowned manga sharpshooter returns in the second of 13 volumes of his “greatest hits” (pun intended). The first tale, circa 1990, recounts the 1989 Communist Chinese massacre at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. But did you know that a Tibetan revolutionary aimed to use this ill-fated democracy movement to advance the independence of his captive homeland, and our assassin must stop him first?
In the second mission, from 1974, “Mr. Togo” meets with the U.S. government in Tijuana and accepts the assignment to kill the Corsican mob’s master heroin chemist “Doctor Z.” He then travels to Marseilles, France, to infiltrate the gang and get intimate with the boss Madame Sandrine Salvi. But, when agent Sally Garland gets captured, how will Golgo finish the job?
Unfortunately, this hero hasn’t aged as well as his inspiration, James Bond, over the past four decades. Exemplifying the dramatic gekiga style, this samurai with a six-shooter is all business with little humor, expression, or sensitivity. The series shows its senility, when it exploits true Chinese and Tibetan tragedies for strained melodrama.
