I Heart Marvel: My Mutant Heart

Unfortunately, this theoretical romance anthology is more misses than hits. I hadn’t been impressed with Daniel Way’s published work, but he contributes not only a solid Wolverine story (which in and of itself is tough to pull off), but one that also works as a romance in the best sense of the word.

You’d think a romance story from Peter Milligan would at least have the advantage of being original, but instead he contributes a film noir detective/shaggy-dog story focusing on that most unpalatable of mutants, Doop (sadly, the cover features Doop manga style in a French maid’s outfit), with an ending that makes you go, “Ew,” instead of, “Aw.”

Written and drawn by Tim Fish, “My Girlfriend the Thief” features Chris Claremont’s most ridiculous, over-hyphenated X-character Lila Cheney (the mutant rock-star space-traveling super-thief), although, in the hands of Fish, she’s picked up a pair of art-school girl glasses and is doing a spot-on Lisa Loeb impression.
