George Pérez: Storyteller

    (Dynamic Forces, 2006)

Yes, this is a requisite book for any George Pérez fan as well as for aspiring artists. If you have the money, buy it. It’s certainly recommended, if for no other reason than that Pérez is a great guy, and the comics community at large confirms it, not only because his charitable track record is well-known.

However… This is a book that should have been an easy four-star review. And, while it is an incredible book, it has a couple of problems, taking it “merely” to the 3.5-star tier. First, the images are sometimes from noticeably worn sources; better-preserved art—especially on the iconic images from his career—would have better served this presentation. Also, there are evident typos—even “Dynamite Entertainment” is misspelled in the appendix of websites.

Nonetheless, this is a rich history and entertaining page-turner of a book about one of comicdom’s most legendary artists. Author Christopher Lawrence had Pérez’ direct involvement in the project, and Storyteller belongs in the library of any serious comic-book reader.
