Jillian Tamaki, a Canadian illustrator who has been featured in publications as diverse as The New Yorker and Nickelodeon, presents her first collection of comics, drawings, and paintings. The artwork seamlessly moves between fantasy and reality. For instance, the opening piece reflects on the city of Edmonton, while the closing comic introduces children who live in a world of unwound cassette tape. Tamaki’s art seems at once crude and detailed, with an emphasis on the natural world. She depicts life without sentimentalizing, letting the ugliness shine through, and providing an intriguing look inside the artist’s mind.
