For the first time since he was elevated to the position of editor-in-chief at Marvel, Joe Quesada returns to one of the Event Comics characters he co-created with Jimmy Palmiotti. Coinciding with the TV movie adaptation that aired on Sci-Fi Channel, this book also marks the premiere of Painkiller Jane under the Dynamite banner. If the Punisher and Wolverine were to have a baby together, Jane Vasco might be the result. A former undercover cop turned vigilante, she uses her ability to heal rapidly to take out urban criminals.

The cool name and cool covers on this series should catch the eye of fans perusing comics-shop shelves. On closer inspection, it appears that Painkiller Jane is a solid action-adventure book. The blood, battles, and big egos bound through the story at breakneck pace, and the protagonist is a calculating, savvy vigilante who knows what she is and where her loyalties lie—the latter part in particular proving pivotal and juicy for her character development.

Like Batman, she has a strong tie to the local police force. However, Jane has no qualms about killing—or, of course, taking damage. She’s literally built to take whatever beating anyone throws at her, be it fisticuffs or flying bullets.

Comic books about vigilantes are a dime a dozen and have been for decades. Even having a female lead—while rare—has been done before. However, so far the creative team behind Jane has presented her in an entertaining, eye-catching way. This is a title to watch.
