In the previous series of B.P.R.D., The Black Flame, one of the long-standing members of the team, Roger the Homunculus, was apparently killed. But what does life or death mean for an artificial man constructed of blood and herbs? That is the question that sends Dr. Kate Corrigan to a quaint isolated town in France where a collector of ancient books and artifacts supposedly has a book that contains the formula for regrowing a homunculus.

The ancient town was the sight of a castle whose owner, Marquis Adoet de Fabre, accumulated a menagerie of unusual creatures in the late 15th century. When the town’s children began mysteriously disappearing, the townspeople stormed the castle with torches and pitchforks. Their efforts were trumped however, by a massive lightening bolt that destroyed the castle. The book collector Dr. Corrigan came to see has a similar penchant for unusual items and his shop, built from the ruined castle’s stones, is much larger on the inside than would seem possible from the outside.

This is the latest miniseries featuring the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense spun off from Mike Mignola’s Hellboy.
