Hellboy: Strange Places

    (Dark Horse, 2006)
™ and ©2006 Mike Mignola

Strange Places compiles The Island and Third Wish along with unpublished art and a Gary Gianni introduction. The Apocalypse has always been a strong theme in horror-related titles. Mignola tackles the role of Hellboy in the end times and his acceptance or denial of it. Mohlomi, an ancient African witch doctor, leads Hellboy to the edge of the ocean. After leaving the ocean, Hellboy goes to an island where he encounters ancient sailors and discovers prophecies and histories of what was and what could be. He learns that choosing not to decide is also a choice and his role is pivotal to the world.

Mignola’s art is incredibly stylish. “Simple” does not mean uninspired — but, in this case, carefully conceived.

Stunning. Amazing. Thought-provoking. Spiritual. Philosophical. Entertaining. Visually hypnotic. Classic.
