Scientist Ted Sallis had left the confines of his government lab, continuing his mysterious research in a secluded hideaway in the Everglades. His project: to recreate the Super Soldier Serum that had created Captain America. Eventually, he believed he had reached his goal, but when he tried to deliver the serum to his government contact, thugs attempted to steal his discovery. With escape impossible, Sallis injected himself with the formula and drove his car headlong into the swamp. In the brackish waters, the serum reacted with Sallis’s bloodstream, transforming him into the creature known as Man-Thing.

Marvel has sometimes been accused of basing Man-Thing on DC’s Swamp Thing, and vice-versa. Truth be told, the two characters were introduced almost simultaneously in 1971, with cover dates so close together that both companies must have had their respective characters in development before the other’s release.
