The Cemeterians

    (Slave Labor, 2006–2007)
™ and ©2006 Gilgrim

Jack (a werewolf) and Franklin (a patchwork monster) are hired to find a man’s missing son. They search for him in the sewers, where they discover his disappearance is connected to a pyramid scheme involving eternal life through the consumption of mermaid flesh.

Admittedly, I’m not the world’s biggest admirer of Gothic comics, but it’s hard imagining even the genre’s most fervent fans buying this amateurish mess. For starters, the art is both inconsistent and ugly, shifting randomly between two different art styles—India ink-drenched Goth and half-manga—and the premise (teen versions of the Universal Studios monsters as monster hunters) is hackneyed.

The logo is nearly illegible, and the text doesn’t seem to have been proofread (“torchered” is used to describe some, wish I were kidding, mutilated manatees, when I’m fairly confident “tortured” is meant), and, while there’s information about the next issue on the inside back cover, it’s lettered in such an extreme Gothic font, it’s virtually unreadable. This represents an all-time low for Slave Labor.
