The Bane of the Black Sword is one of many titles First Comics adapted from Michael Moorcock’s fantasy books about Elric of Melniboné. The powerful warrior and sorcerer, Elric, became a nomad after being wrongfully accused of aiding in the destruction of his people. In The Bane of the Black Sword, Elric and his traveling partner, Moonglum, agree to help a group of merchants destroy a local merchant who practices undercutting his competition’s prices. His main reason for accepting the mission is to do battle with his arch enemy, K’aarna, an evil sorcerer bent on world conquest. Elric realizes that he will not be able to destroy both the merchants’ army and K’aarna by himself, so he seeks out his countrymen, who are now mercenaries, for aid. Although they blame Elric for the destruction of their homes, the warriors agree to help because Elric’s people always think of their own welfare before they give in to their urge for revenge.
