In the latest retelling of the familiar manga tale about the Yagyu clan, Jubei-Akane has earned the right to inherit the mantle of best swordsman. Except she’s a girl who also can identify demons with her red eye. Moreover, she tangles with the horn-headed warrior Hideyasu, who seeks vengeance upon his power-mad father, the regent of Japan, and his demonic minions.
Perhaps both of them can join forces as demon slayers (aka onimusha) to combat the rising threat to the land — the hellish Genma. But will Akane’s grandfather Lord Yagyu be able to bestow upon her the sacred blade in time, or will her traitorous uncle Munenori seize it and become the clan’s next leader?
Based on the Capcom videogame series, this manufactured marketing story is the “genesis” to the newest game. Having enjoyed success with its other Capcom tie-ins, Udon joins the fray in producing right-to-left-reading manga. But here the art isn’t as inspired as in the Streetfighter or Darkstalkers series, and the script seems even more convoluted.
