Catching Lucifer’s Lunch
(Summ, 2006)
™ and © 2006 Summ Publications
This book might have the catchiest title (pun unintended) of any comic in this month’s review section. Brothers T.J. (the writer) and Jason (the artist) May have concocted a tale of mortal bedevilment that proves entertaining, despite relying on more than a few clichés to complete the task.
Those clichés start early, with the overbearing girlfriend, the brothers who have lost their parents—the much older brother taking care of the much younger one, and his girlfriend (see aforementioned) not making it easy. Been done before.
However, the art is beautiful and atmospheric and presents the writer’s intentions well. By providing pictures that are indistinct and blurred at times, Jason May provides an apt artistic metaphor for the actions taken by the protagonist, as he strives to rescue his young brother from the clutches of Lucifer and his domain.
The writing also has its moments. There are twists and surprising(ly) good parts along the way, certainly enough to make it worth the time to read—if you’ve got six bucks to spare.
