Teen Boat!

This is a strange comic book. Teen Boat! sort of resembles Archie if Archie could transform himself into a boat. The main character is a normal teenager with “nautical heritage.”

The comic book doesn’t focus on Teen Boat saving people in the local harbor; it focuses on typical, kid-friendly plots. In this issue, Teen Boat decides that he wants to run for class president. He must beat the mean jock, Harry Cobbs. Teen Boat feels alienated because he is different. He has a crush on the hot girl in school, which blinds him to a female friend who actually likes him.

Teen Boat! was the Winner of the 2004 Outstanding Debut in the Ignatz Awards. John Green and Dave Roman’s art is clean and well done. Their writing is pretty on the mark, but how far can you take a concept like this? The comic book would work just as well if the kid had a normal name and couldn’t transform into a boat. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a well done mini–comic, definitely pick up Teen Boat!
