Zombies!: Feast
(IDW, 2006)
™ and © 2006 Idea + Design Works
A slow-moving bus full of hardened criminals is scary enough, but it’s even worse when that bus breaks down and everyone is forced to get out and walk to the nearest town. Something isn’t right in that town, though; for one thing, it appears to be deserted. Or is it? There are people there, sort of. It’s not just clear if any of them are still alive….
Zombie tales can sometimes grow old; it seems everyone wants to publish their own. When they’re done as smartly and creepily as this one, though, it’s hard to complain. Gripping writing and grisly painted art make this series better than many of its ilk.
— Andy Richardson
From the Comics Buyer’s Guide:
You’ve probably heard this one before, but… This is a zombie story with more meat and plot than your average zombie story. Seriously. It starts out, as so many in the genre do, resembling another George Romero-esque homage without soul, but, as it continues, it not only proves it has soul, but also heart.
What sets this apart from most zombie stories—and what Romero has illustrated in his films that most who have followed in his footsteps have missed—is dynamic characters. You won’t find Linnea Quigley dancing on a tombstone here. The characters in Zombies!: Feast, mostly hardcore prison convicts whose transfer-bus ride is horrifically interrupted, tend to have more than one dimension and make reading the story an experience that’s far more than the sum of its piecey parts.
The art is fine but inconsistent, ranging from well done and detailed to merely adequate, though the best parts are the eerie and slightly out-of-focus backgrounds. Effective.
Gorge yourself on Zombies!: Feast. It’s worth it.
