I am Spartacus
(Cellar Door, 2006)
™ and © 2006 Dan Wickline
Who is Spartacus? Is he a good guy or a bad guy? These questions plague former police detective Tiffany Munday, when she’s hired to find out who is killing employees at a prestigious corporation in this near-future science-fiction crime drama.
The dark art so vividly pronounced on the cover sets the atmosphere for the book, complementing the writing. The characters are often multi-layered, and, though the art doesn’t always seem quite up to the task of portraying that, it does an excellent job at showing the type of world Spartacus offers.
Wickline’s story doesn’t leave much room for whodunit fans to try to solve the crimes as the pages turn, but, as the book draws to a close, the author puts in a couple of nice plot twists that raise this story above many others. The story could have been more enjoyable with a few more hints along the way to pull the reader into figuring out what’s going on, but it’s still an entertaining story with wonderfully dark art. Moreover, for the production quality of the book, $6 isn’t a bad price.
