The “countdown” of the title is a serious one: it’s until the total destruction of the Earth. Alien creatures are determined to obliterate it, and they’re not even necessarily evil themselves—but the criminals they are pursuing are so unspeakably horrible that they can justify their actions. That explanation doesn’t sit well with a team of powerful heroes who mean to put an end to the aliens’ scheme. They’d better hurry, though: the Earth is being cooked, humans are being herded into mountainous hideaways, and now the heroes themselves are beginning to feel and behave strangely…
