When legendary Admiral Boyzdej, man of action turned statesman, attends a celebration of his galactic union’s declaration of universal peace (because there’s no one left to oppose it) it should be the high point of his long career, But his starship The Dreadnought is unexpectedly attacked by trolls and dragons from a universe of magic.
Star Trek vs. Lord of the Rings might be a little too on-the-nose a description for this mini-series, but it gets across the high concept. Except for a nice moment where the Admiral has to accept his daughter wanting to marry a member of a formerly hostile, very alien race, emotionally speaking, the cupboard is bare.
And once you get past the slick surface, there’s not much character to the characters, but that surface sure is pretty. The artwork is done in an Ashley Wood smudgy style and the science vs. magic schism is articulated through some inventive, impressionistic use of color (though my poor aged eyes could have done without the dueling red and blue colors of the captions).
