Fun Home is a memoir by Alison Bechdel as she retells the story of her childhood and what is was like to grow up as the daughter of the mortician for their small community. As a family business, the funeral home required that everyone help out, and she was introduced to the concept of death, and to the trappings of it, at an early age. An exacting, temperamental man, her father was also a keeper of many secrets, and as she got older, she began to piece together his past, and see aspects of him in her own personality. Underscored with references to her father’s own early, accidental death and his funeral, Fun Home is a touching biography.
