Battler Britton

In 1942 Africa, a British fighter squadron led by Commander Britton meets up with their American counterparts for a joint mission to destroy an Axis ammunition dump. But it’s mutual loathing at first sight between the Brits and Yanks and a bare knuckle brawl is only the beginning as the animosity builds when their first mission together goes horribly wrong.
It won’t hurt you one bit to learn from the text page that Battler Britton was once a famous (in the UK) fighter pilot who fought the Nazis for decades of fictional adventures that started in the ’50s. But knowing this is in no way necessary and won’t get in the way of your enjoyment of the opening salvo of this truly splendid World War II mini-series.

Maybe his boyhood admiration for the character has made him restrain himself, but anyone expecting to find Garth Ennis’ usual brand of nearly pathological scatological nihilism will be happily disappointed. The dialogue crackles and Colin Wilson does a remarkable job of both rendering and putting the reader squarely inside those vintage warplanes.
